Near-critical turbulent free-surface flow over a wavy bottom

چکیده
Abstract Steady plane turbulent free-surface flow over a slightly wavy bottom is considered for very large Reynolds numbers, small slopes, and Froude numbers close to the critical value 1. As in previous works, slope deviation from number are assumed be coupled such that turbulence modeling not required. The amplitudes of periodic elevations, however, half an order magnitude larger than case bumps or ramps finite length. Asymptotic expansions give steady-state version extended Korteweg–deVries (KdV) equation surface elevation. extension consists forcing term due unevenness damping friction at bottom. Other quantities, as pressure, velocity components, local force, can expressed terms Exact solutions KdV equation, describing stationary cnoidal waves, obtained bottoms particular shapes. limiting case, solitary waves ramp re-obtained accord with results.

Direct Numerical Simulation (dns) of Turbulent Flow over Wavy Surfaces
Abstract. The present study adresses the turbulent flow over a wavy surface by direct numerical simulation (DNS). Compared to classical channel flow the wavy surface structure adds a degree of complexity to the flow by inducing streamline curvature, flow separation and flow reattachment, thus leading to flow situations which are often present in relevant technical and geophysical applications. ...
متن کاملTurbulent Flow over Cars
In this paper the flow behaviour over a number of car bodies is studied. For this purpose the unsteady 2-D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations have been applied. After averaging and nondimensionalizing the equations, the system of equations has been transformed from the Cartesian (x-y) coordinates to a body fitted generalized (-) coordinate. As the flow is incompressible, the density in the ...
متن کاملModeling Turbulent Hydraulic Fracture Near a Free Surface
Motivated by observations of the subglacial drainage of water, we consider a hydraulic fracture problem in which the crack grows parallel to a free surface, subject to fully turbulent fluid flow. Using a hybrid Chebyshev=series-minimization numerical approach, we solve for the pressure profile, crack opening displacement, and crack growth rate for a crack that begins relatively short but eventu...
متن کاملIsogeometric Variational Multiscale Large-Eddy Simulation of Fully-developed Turbulent Flow over a Wavy Wall
We report on the isogeometric residual-based variational multiscale (VMS) Large Eddy Simulation of a fully developed turbulent flow over a wavy wall. To assess the predictive capability of the VMS modeling framework, we compare its predictions against the results from direct numerical simulation (DNS) and, when available, against experimental measurements. We use C quadratic B-spline basis func...
متن کاملDirect numerical simulation of turbulent flow over a compliant surface
Direct numerical simulation of turbulent channel flow over a compliant surface has been performed to evaluate the friction drag reduction effect. It is found that a slight drag reduction is observed over a compliant surface. This observation indicates that drag reduction is possible using a compliant surface that is deformed passively by wall pressure fluctuation. A small wall displacement and ...
